A project titled "Detection of Smokers in Smoke-Free Zones Using Image Processing and Audio Warning System", developed by the faculty member and students of the Management Information Systems Department, has been selected for funding under the TÜBİTAK 2209-A University Students Research Projects Support Program within the scope of the 2024 first-term call.
Assoc supervises the project. Prof. Dr. Nur Kuban TORUN, a faculty member of our department. The project lead is third-year student Merve ÖNALAN, while fourth-year student Oğuzhan TATLI is the project partner.
The project aims to protect designated smoke-free areas within university campuses and other public spaces. Utilizing image processing technology, the system is designed to accurately detect smoking behavior and respond with audio alerts to individuals violating the smoke-free regulations. In doing so, it seeks to safeguard the health of individuals exposed to secondhand smoke and effectively enforce smoke-free zones.
The project also targets reducing passive smoking on university campuses, raising awareness of healthy living and environmental responsibility, and contributing to broader societal awareness in line with sustainable development goals. Specifically, it supports Goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals: "Good Health and Well-Being."
As the MIS Department, we congratulate our faculty members and students and wish them continued success.
