Academic Career
This page has been prepared to help friends who wish to continue their postgraduate education (Master's, Doctorate). Some questions about master's and doctorate with thesis are answered.
1) What is a master's degree and a doctorate?
A master's degree starts after 4 years of undergraduate study, and the duration of study is normally two years. One year of this period consists of a course and one year of thesis (Thesis: an original, scientific work. The student chooses a topic together with his/her responsible advisor and conducts research accordingly. The master's degree is extended for a maximum of one year. Unsuccessful candidates are dismissed by their Institutes. The doctorate starts after the master's degree. Under normal circumstances, the duration of study is four years in total, including two years of course work and two years of thesis. The doctorate is extended for a maximum of two years. Unsuccessful candidates are dismissed by their Institutes.
With the recent amendments to the law, it is possible to start a doctorate (combined doctorate) directly after undergraduate studies. The normal duration is 5 years. However, many universities do not have this practice. Those who start a doctorate directly after their bachelor's degree also take master's degree courses. The grades required to register for a combined PhD are higher.
2) What are the advantages of a master's degree and a doctorate?
In order to get an academic title (Dr., Assoc. Prof. Dr., Assoc. Dr., Prof. Dr.), it is essential to have a doctorate degree. A person who wants to be an academic at any university in the future must complete his/her graduate education.
In addition, while being a civil servant, those who complete a master's degree are promoted one step (1 year); those who complete a doctorate are promoted two steps.
3) What is required to start a master's degree?
In order to start a master's degree, in addition to graduation, it is necessary to meet the following conditions:
a) ALES : All higher education institutions will use the results of this exam in the selection and placement of students for graduate programs.
Candidates must score at least 55 points in the score type of the graduate program to which they apply (70 points for those who will apply to a doctorate or proficiency in art program with a bachelor's degree). Higher education institutions will announce to the candidates how much weight the exam score will be taken into consideration in the selection of students for graduate programs, provided that it is not less than 50%. Higher education institutions may use only these scores in the selection process, or they may use these scores for pre-selection purposes or as part of their own exam.
b) Foreign Language Exam: These are exams such as ÜDS and KPDS. These two exams are especially valid everywhere. KPDS is general, 100 questions and 180 minutes. In ÜDS, you have 80 questions and 180 minutes. And there are three fields in ÜDS: science, social sciences and health sciences. Therefore, UDS is considered more advantageous. Some universities have set a certain threshold. In some universities, there is no score threshold.
c) Science Exam: We would not be wrong if we say, “This is the real exam.” An oral exam is conducted by a jury (usually 3 academicians) consisting of the professors of the department you will enter. In this exam, questions related to the field you are applying for (for example, if you are taking the exam from chemistry, the questions are chemistry) are asked.
d) Graduation Grade: This is also included in the calculation.
The ratio in which the above-mentioned items will be calculated varies from university to university. However, if there is something general, it is the overwhelming superiority of ALES. In some universities, ALES has a 60% effect.4) When are the master's exams open?
These exams are held in September and January. Each university publishes the department, quotas and requirements on its website and in newspapers. You can also follow these announcements on www.memurlar.net.
4) Is it obligatory to take the master's exam from the department you graduated from?
Not all universities have such an obligation; however, it becomes more difficult to succeed in the exam, and if necessary, there will be one year of scientific preparation courses. It is more advantageous to take the exam from the department you graduated from. Nevertheless, the decision is yours.
5) Can we apply for a master's degree immediately after graduation?
If you meet the requirements, you can apply immediately. However, there may not be a master's degree in every department you want or it may not be opened that year.
How to Become a Research Assistant?

Are research assistants recruited every year?
No, they may not be hired. It is within the need.
Can every master's degree graduate or doctorate graduate become a research assistant?
No, they cannot. For a research assistant to be promoted, he/she must have a postgraduate education. However, there is no such thing that everyone who does postgraduate education will become a research assistant. As mentioned above, if there is a vacancy and if they meet the requirements better than other applicants, they can become a research assistant.
